Darren laid his injury demons to rest and gained a fabulous body in 23 weeks
After a horrific shoulder injury at his old gym and an adrenal crash that followed, 43-year-old Darren was at a low point.
He had lost all hope of ever being able to get back his old fitness routine.
He was too scared to start training but had to do something – his sedentary lifestyle as a dental practice owner and the daily commute kept adding kilos to his body.
Finally, a recommendation from a friend got him to give personal training one more shot – but this time he went with the world’s leading trainers in Ultimate Performance.
He entered the U.P. Mayfair gym in London without much hope or trust, but his time there proved that dedication and correct training could achieve wonders.
“I am a numbers person and couldn’t believe I had dropped from 31.5% to 13% body fat and lost 15.3kg in 23 weeks.
“My trainer and I couldn’t believe the abdominals that had been hidden under the bonnet; he said that he could wash his clothes on them!
“I actually can’t even recognize myself in my ‘before’ photos. But that’s really inspiring because you realise this is how you are meant to look. The normal wasn’t before; the normal is now.”
A few months earlier, Darren had pretty much given up trying to get fit again.
He had spent money and effort training with personal trainers but had lost all faith in the system when all he got for it was an injury.
“I have had a few personal trainers from well-known gyms chains. These personal trainers would often give me high volume, complex programmes with HIIT training that led to overtraining and injuries.
“They had limited knowledge of diet and nutrition and limited knowledge of precise technique on how to correctly perform the exercises and how to rectify injuries sustained in the gym following overtraining. I had really lost faith in all personal trainers.”
Darren entered U.P. in a very anxious and skeptical frame of mind. He had signed up but wasn’t able to commit himself completely. He wasn’t sure if he had recovered enough to cope with the commute, training, and dieting. But it just took a couple of weeks to put all his doubts to rest.
“I was not exercising at the gym due to the worry of overdoing the training and suffering from the injury again. My trainer helped me overcome these injury demons thanks to his excellent attention to form and technique.”
This helped me build trust and restore my faith in personal training.”
“Outside of the gym, my energy levels increased, stamina and fitness also increased. After a few weeks, I could run 30 minutes non-stop to the train station with my heavy rucksack on prior to my training session. I soon realised my fitness had transformed. I became less stressed and had a change of focus.”
Eating clean, training hard and staying focused saw Darren transform himself. He came in with a broken and unfit body and left with washboard abs – it’s a result he is truly proud of.
“Nearly everyone joins the gym without learning how to lift correctly. I feel I have nailed the correct technique and form on the exercises and learned to correct the bad techniques I had developed over the years when training on my own.
“It has restored my faith in Personal Training – putting back the ‘personal’ into ‘PT’.
“I can honestly say that there is a world of difference between the U.P. trainers and the average personal trainer. The reassurance, attention to technique, accountability and care provided is excellent, and they have a wealth of experience within the whole team which gives you the reassurance under the U.P. brand. You cannot buy experience!”
It’s this knowledge that Darren says will stay with him for a lifetime.
“I have learned about the nutrient needs for my body and the training protocols required in order to avoid overtraining. I would say it has given me confidence and a solid foundation on which to build upon and have developed the tools for training and have a skill set for life.
“The value that has been given to me by U.P. is priceless; you can’t put a price on it. These are tools you can use for the rest of your life, literally.”
