We are big believers in different courses for different horses, so if aquaerobics and body pump classes are your kind of exercise heaven then it’s probably best that you skip this page, and in fact this entire website, and return to the safety of your Virgin Active or David Lloyd. You will in fact detest our “modified strongman” Group Fat Loss Training if the following applies to you:
Now that we have eliminated a few waifs and strays, if you are curious as to what our Viking & Valkyrie Group Fat Loss training is all about, why modified strongman training is so effective for fat loss and overall conditioning then a look at the following video of one of our classes might give you an inkling of what is in store at a modified strongman training class:

There is a real danger when discussing “strongman training” that we automatically lose 99% of the listeners as soon as the images of Geoff Capes and 300lb Viking strongmen spring to mind. Fear not, modified strongman training for fat loss is less about bending bars, tossing cabers, and lifting back breaking loads, rather it is all about delivering real functional training in a manner that elevates the metabolism, promotes fat burning hormonal output, and improves practical strength and endurance. Essentially what we do in our own modified strongman training classes are more intense versions of what our rural great grandfathers used to do in their everyday lives.

Carrying heavy objects – we use a farmer’s walk apparatus or old beer kegs half filled with water that slosh about awkwardly. Those of you who are tough enough can use the super yoke.
Pulling heavy objects “quickly”! – whether that means dragging a weighted sled, pulling loads using a rope, or even (if you are very lucky) an impromptu bout of tug of war!
Lifting heavy objects – logs, kegs, people (we jest!) above your head…for reps.

Running with heavy objects – modified strongman training for fat loss is actually a very safe and controlled endeavour so we don’t actually have you sprinting with giant bag of sand on your back (although that does sound like a nice idea…). Instead we have a nifty gadget called a prowler that enables you to push a variable load as fast as you can go.
Challenging feats of exertion that you could never normally do in a gym – fancy having a go at pushing a car whilst a few of your friends cheer you on and nervously wait their own turns? There are also tyre flips, sledgehammer bashing and various other delights but we don’t want to give the entire game away without you coming down to see for yourself.

Traditional cardiovascular training is extremely limited in its success, scope and suitability. If you doubt our words then visit your local GloboGym and take a photo of the misguided souls slaving away for hour after hour on the treadmill or the elliptical machine. Come back a month later and compare your photo to what now sweats before you – there will be no difference.
We have numerous articles on this site about the perils of overdoing cardio for fat loss, so instead lets focus on why modified strongman training for fat loss is so effective. The simple answer is that when performing regular cardio, think jogging as a prime example, your body quickly adapts to the stress, becomes conditioned and efficient at the task in hand, and is able to run (or jog in this case) along in a lower gear. Contrast this modified strongman training where you train a wide cross section of muscle groups, across multiple planes, using numerous energy systems. There is quite simply no opportunity for downshifting and as a result the fat burning, metabolism boosting impact is immense.
Although we incorporate some aspects of modified strongman training into virtually all of our fat loss training protocols, we have found the best environment for the most dynamic, rewarding and exciting strongman workouts is in a group context. We currently run weekend classes of London based modified strongman training for fat loss and would encourage you to call us (0207 0331942) or email us at VikingFatLoss@UPFitness.co.uk register your interest.

I’m not a class lover and never do any spinning or aerobics but I”ll definitely be a regular for this type of training! It is a challenging body and mind workout unlike anything I ever tried before!”

“Just a quick note to let you know how enjoyable Saturdays Strong Man class was, I along with everyone else I spoke to found it to be challenging, interesting and rewarding. The guys made sure everyone worked to the best of their ability, kept everyone motivated and pushed us all to get the maximum out of the session.
To work alongside other clients pushing, lifting, carrying whilst being encouraged by the trainers meant that at no point did we consider or were we allowed to relax, it was 40 minutes of enjoyable pain. I will be back!”

Different from PT as training with others is more sociable and great for the reasons given above. Different from regular gym class as they tend to be pure cardio which Strongman isn’t; there’s probably more room to slack off if you’re so inclined in a class than when doing 30s intervals surrounded by your peers!”

“Strongman was more intense than a regular gym class. Variety was good. There was more incentive to push myself harder because of the other lads watching. The competitive atmosphere was very positive and the number of instructors watching every “station” made everything run like clockwork.
The class is fantastic for people who are bored with cardio in the gym and are also short on time.”
