It would be no exaggeration to say that Tom brings a unique perspective to personal training that has won him many fans amongst his very happy clients. This is because Tom, although a lifelong fitness and weight training enthusiast, was first exposed to “real” personal training when he was actually a client of Nick Mitchell’s in 2008/2009.
They say a picture paints a thousand words, so let us simply refer you to the photos that accompany this profile, and say that Tom is a “FFB” (“former fat boy” if you will pardon the vulgarity!) who despite playing rugby through University, and an early career as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, has always struggled with his weight. He has an innate understanding of the trials and tribulations necessary to help clients get into top shape, in part because he has had to work so hard himself and every lb of fat dropped from his body has been a struggle of epic proportions. Tom’s other advantage over many personal trainers is also that following his Navy career he entered the City, rising up to head a Hedge Fund sales desk, and is therefore intimately aware and empathetic of the stresses and strains of professional life and how it can impact upon any health regime.
Inspired by the changes in his body and the control he felt he had regained over his life, Tom began studying with Nick Mitchell in early 2009, has sat a number of the Poliquin (PICP) courses, and since joining UP full time has quickly established himself as one of our most popular, hard working, and outgoing personal trainers.
A Few Words From Nick Mitchell:
The secret to being a great personal trainer is that you must really care about your clients. Tom, because of all the struggles he has been through with his own body, cares so much you can feel it coming out of his bones! I’ve never seen anyone have to work quite so hard to achieve the results that Tom did – he may not love me saying this, but the man has the metabolism of a sloth! A sluggish, porky sloth at that! And this has been to his massive advantage in his career as a personal trainer, as he really understands the struggles his clients can go through, and appreciates that a large part of success is through the ability to stay positive and mentally strong.
He also manage to steal / acquire a lot of tricks off me from the time I was training, and later teaching, him and he is well on his way to becoming one of London’s most outstanding PTs!
